I tried this on my 5800 just after reading your question, I can definitely notice the difference but it did not make my music louder, I could only notice change in bass and treble.
I think there is nothing wrong with your phone and If you ask me you should never change the equalizer settings, The music you hear with default equalizer is what the music director wants us to hear so don’t change it..
5800 has the best music quality it beats even ipod touch, So why do you want to change it? check out this-

If you want to install to a third party that you need to login. For this you need as FREESIGN and a certificate program. Generally Windows Movie Maker support .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv. If you use Vista it also support .dvr-ms.

So you can convert your video to any of them above, I recommend 4Videosoft Video Converter Platinum which can convert between any video formats including MPG, MPEG, MPEG2, VOB, MP4, M4V, RM, RMVB, WMV, etc and extract audio from these video.

It also converts between all audio formats including MP3, MP2, AAC, AC3, WAV, MID, MIDI, WMA, M4A, RA, RAM, OGG, APE, AU, FLAC .
